So… I told you I thought it was
a diet tweak that brought my voice back.
Maybe it was? Maybe it wasn't...
Truth is, there was SO much crazy stuff that happened between my voice coming back that it could have been a number of things!
Okay so in December of 2022 I decided to start the new year with the goal of becoming a vegetarian.
Part of this was because after getting sick off a hamburger I started to feel repulsed by all meat, and even eggs.
Now… you gotta know that I've always been a meat-eater.
(ha.. I sound like a dinosaur 🦖)...
So giving up meat was a big change for me!
But starting the last week of December and into January, I was KILLING it.
Oops wrong choice of words.
As a new vegetarian I WASN'T killing it (as in the animals),
but I WAS doing awesome with the new diet... lol...
(sorry lame dad joke)
Anyway, one month later was when I lost my voice!
I didn't have a cold or anything.
Wasn't sick at all.
Didn't notice any allergy symptoms.
It just randomly came on.
Shortly before I lost it though, I did notice tightness not inside my throat, but around it.
The other strange thing was my voice was somehow connected to a weird lack of breath support in my stomach.
This means that I ran out of breath quicker than normal when speaking a normal sentence.
My regular talking voice was raspy and limited to my deep chest voice when speaking.
My normal singing range of course was toast (the gross kind without jam or butter)
GAH sorry I'll stop with the dry dad humor.
Also, I couldn't make any guttural sounds in my throat (like "uh" or "ee"... basically all the vowel sounds without a consonant letter in front)
Anyway, I want to share all the crazy stuff in between that I tried to do to bring it back...
Maybe I'll do those in separate journal entries...
ULTIMATELY 5 months into my vegetarianism (and after four months of losing my voice)
I started craving BEEF.
Specifically beef.
Not pork.
Not chicken.
BEEF.
"Where's the beef!?" haha...
And mind you, up until this point I was still repulsed by all meat.
But I felt my body craving beef and only beef.
What the?
Then I had a crazy thought...
What if after all these crazy things I tried to do to bring my voice back, it was actually the vegetarian diet that triggered my voice getting lost?
At this point I was desperate.
I told my wife Sarah, "Alright let's go get some beef tacos!"
I. KID. YOU. NOT.
I ate two beef tacos that night, and on the drive home I was SINGING AGAIN!
It wasn't 100% back, but there was a huge noticeable difference.
Since then I kept eating beef and it continued to improve.
Why beef though?
I have no idea. I'm still baffled.
What do you think? Is this possible?
In my next entry I'll share more of the crazy stuff that happened in between all this.
