LYRICS
I don’t know what I’ve been sold
I’ve found a thousand reasons to fold
Out is in, inside’s out
I’ll never lift myself
Without a sound in tune, just distracted
How could I believe
This act is over soon?
If I don’t rule out
Time is fixed if I don’t follow
Down!
If I’m going down
Will you even come with me?
Down…
If I’m going down
Will you still follow me there?
Time’s up they say it’s slower
Follow suit and you’re soon over,
Isn’t it so attractive?
Watch my thirties get redacted,
Can I fall into sunlight?
The world is under starlit eyes,
Will they save us when we’re
At each other’s throats and we fall
Down!
If I’m going down
Will you even come with me?
Down…
If I’m going down
Will you still follow me there?
When with words I fail to reach
With music I will try to speak
Just speak!
Will you wake me when it’s over
Come and get me is it over?
Will you wake me when it’s over
Can it please, just please be over?
Down!
If I’m going down
Will you even come with me?
Down…
If I’m going down
Will you still follow me there?
‘Cause I just wanna go home.
SONG LORE
Writing Process
So this song came to me towards the tail end of a decent hiatus away from songwriting. My wife Sarah and I just built a new house, my work in the TV music industry was incredibly busy, and I was starting to wonder if I was in the right career. I started applying for jobs to teach music locally here in Arizona. My first interviews came up, and I COMPLETELY lost my voice! I wasn’t sick or anything, it just randomly was gone and stayed gone for a whole four months! Nothing like this had ever happened to me before. If I ever lost my voice it was because of a cold or illness of some kind.
It was a whole big deal and mystery. If you’d like to hear all the juicy details, I wrote a whole studio journal series about it (my first ones of 2023) which you can access HERE as part of our FUTURE SPHERE extra perks. My realization at the end of the whole experience was actually quite life-changing.
All in all, the video demo you can watch above was recorded while my voice was just barely coming back and not at complete strength. I had wondered if pushing myself to record myself singing might help me “find my voice” again. In the end, I think it very well could have been a big part of it, but when I actually wrote the song it was like magic. There are very few times that a song will come to me all at once. Usually it takes ages of toiling over lyrics, melodies, and meanings. For this song, I sat down with my guitar one night and the words and melody flowed out so fast, I couldn’t write them down fast enough. Love it when that happens.
Song Meaning
I always hesitate to share a song’s meaning because it’s usually specific to me, but I truly feel these songs are meant for each listener to interpret and find their own meaning. I’d hate for my meaning to get in the way from a listener finding their own. Also, over time I usually find different meanings come out of my songs for me so it’s always changing.
That said, this song was originally inspired by a book called “The Three Waves of Volunteers and the New Earth” by an author named Dolores Cannon. It really is an awe & wonder-filled way to think about extra-terrestrials, interdimensionals, and souls on Earth today. It’s also about finding purpose in life and discovering soul missions.
Beyond that, the angst and frustration of losing my voice especially went into the bridge lyrics when I emphatically sing the words, “JUST SPEAK!”
