“We Are One”
*Much like a painter starts a piece of work by mixing colors together they’d like to use onto a palette, that’s what I’ve done here, but I call it a sound palette which helps me figure out what overall sound I’d like to accomplish with the song.
Here’s just a short rough sample of that:
VIDEO CONTENT:
This is a full acoustic sketch of the full song. I’m always a little hesitant to show a song at this early of stage, but I trust you’ll be able to look past the lack of “production sheen” so far just for demo purposes. The above sound palette at the top of this page will paint a better picture of what I want this song to sound like.
LYRICS
Wake up in illusion space and time
Under law of confusion, distorted eyes
We still sign up
If we don’t have anything to lose
Only love can bind us
We are one, you and I
We are pieces of the beautiful
Kaleidoscope of mind
We are here for a time
We are breathing in the miracle
Under a veil of stars
To wake up second part
Is the choosing of a heart
On the side of dark or side of bright
To serve the self or other self
What highest mother only felt
With highest father, half the key
To turn the lock inside the tree of life
The choice is ours.
If we don’t have anything to lose
Only love can bind us
When we don’t have anything to fear
Only light can find us
The choice is ours
We are one, you and I
We are pieces of the beautiful
Kaleidoscope of mind
We are here for a time
We are in the living miracle
Under a veil of stars’ design
We don’t have anything to lose
Our love binds us
We don’t have anything to fear
Our light finds us
The choice is ours
Where both the choice of will collide
We are one
We are love
We are light
We are
SONG LORE
Writing Process
The lyrics and vocal melody actually came first with this one. When that happens, shortly afterwards I go to the guitar to figure out which chords sound best behind the vocal melodies. Even watching back to the video above right now, I already know there are a few chords I want to tweak. Sometimes finding the chords on the guitar is limiting so I’ll switch to the piano instead. I’ll likely do this as I continue to develop the sound palette I have for it so far.
Once I knew the overall sketch and structure of the song, I opened up a session in Logic X to start recording the sound palette. I hear in my head this atmospheric kind of vibe to begin the first verse, which is what you’re hearing so far on the sound palette. Most of this will probably stay in the final, but not all of it. By the first chorus in my head I already hear that I’d like the drums or percussion to start introducing some more rhythm to the song. Overall, I want this to feel like a big epic build to a huge finale to end the album with… so I still have a ways to go with this one.
Song Meaning
After my family and I left the religion I was born and raised in (or actually this was kind of concurrent with all of it), I really started digging through all sorts of material out there to see if there was anything that resonated with me spiritually more than what I had already been given my whole life within religion. I studied other scriptures, texts, and even started learning other languages to really find what my soul was looking for. Eventually I came across some material called The Law of One, in which some UFO researchers started experimenting with making contact with extraterrestrial entities through channeling. (Pretty wild stuff to come across initially and my mind was completely blown open reading it).
Anyway, what came through in these books was a ton of stuff that really resonated with me about how “we are all one”. Really beautiful stuff… so that’s where this song kind of emerged from, reading those books.
