“Open Your Wings”
*Just a clip of what I have so far of the darker/more angsty approach than the original:
VIDEO CONTENT:
There isn’t any visual footage here, just an audio comparison of this clip of the new approach and how it compares up to the old approach.
LYRICS
We’re losing dreams for sleep
Sleeping away from you
We’re falling way too deep
Too deep for a life with you
‘Cause now you are dead to me
And there’s no chasing after you
It’s forcing us to break free
Free from our beautiful, mutual dreams
(Probably going to re-do these originally-inspirational chorus lines):
Fly, butterfly
Open your wings
Try for everything
You’ve wanted to be
If it’s fear that is holding you back
From your flight, butterfly
Don’t be afraid
Well maybe my current dreams of
Your return will be
The solution to my troubled heart
And troubled soul
My hope that you’ll come back to me now
Fly, butterfly
Open your wings
Try for everything
You’ve wanted to be
If it’s fear that is holding you back
From your flight, butterfly
Don’t be afraid, butterfly
Look how far we’ve come
As we take our flight
Towards the Sun
But if you love me
Then won’t you come back
When you’re done?
Butterfly, don’t be afraid
(Also probably going to re-imagine this originally inspirational ending):
Live up to your creation
Fly, butterfly
Try, butterfly
Live up to your creation
Won’t you come back to me now?
Fly, butterfly open your wings
Try, butterfly
Look how far we’ve come
Butterfly, come back
When you’re done, butterfly
And we’ll take our (flight…)
We were made to LOVE
SONG LORE
Writing Process
I originally wrote the first version of this song during my undergraduate studies in college going through the ups and downs of college dating life. When I wrote this one, I had very particular angsty feelings about a recent breakup, and I wanted to put that dark emotion into a song.
Before I kind of grew into accepting the “shadow” that life always manages to bring (and being okay with sitting in/accepting those shadow moments) I had a hard time writing a darker/angsty song that stayed in that mood or didn’t have a mood change from dark to uplifting. I frequently wanted to change the mood of those darker songs to end on a more hopeful note. That is very much the case with the original “Open Your Wings” as the verse moods are polar opposites from the chorus and final ending moods.
In this new approach, I’d like to change that by staying in the same dark mood thru the entire song.
Song Meaning
Originally this song was about an old college breakup over 13-14 years ago which you can read about here on the original “Open Your Wings” song content page from my Shadow / Light experience.
Since then, this song has taken on new meaning for me. Instead of breaking up with another person, I want it to be about me breaking up with “the old me”, and all of the dark emotion that comes with that...
I’m still exploring what this would sound like musically and lyrically, but the basic concept here is in place for this change. Keep checking back here as the song progresses. I’m VERY excited!
