Some behind-the-scenes footage of my creation process on “Find Yourself”
LYRICS
Find Yourself
Hiding out with no more friends
You told them off no sympathy
Better off if you call this your therapy
Nothing’s ever better than your center of anomaly
You’re turning out to be like everyone else
And when it blows up in your face,
Who will be left to blame?
In your mind you can hide away
But nothing ever works out til you find yourself fading.
Shutting in and shutting down forgetting who you want to be
Never figured out just how to be yourself
Too late so tired of running out of options
With the daylight waning in your eyes but only in your eyes
If you could only see your face
It only lies when out of place
In your mind you can hide away
But nothing ever works out til you find yourself fading.
In the fire you will shy away
And never make your way out til you find yourself, baby.
How can I falter?
How do I break?
How can I stumble down to the same?
Has it all come down to this?
Falling never stopped the chase
(Find yourself, baby!)
You can never stop the sound of it
(Find yourself, fading!)
‘Cause only you get in your own damn way!
(Guitar solo)
In your mind you can hide away
But nothing ever works out til you find yourself fading.
In the fire you will shy away
And never make your way out til you find yourself, baby.
Just find yourself fading now.
SONG LORE
Writing Process
I started writing this song in 2019. Is it just me or did time skip forward a few years during 2020 and beyond? I keep thinking 2019 was last year, but here we are 4 years later already. So wild. So this song has literally been a process of “finding myself” to get it to a point that I am ready to release it.
I wanted this to have a gritty feel during the verses with those chugging electric guitars. The very first thing I wrote for this song was the verses actually which is very different than most songs for me. Most songs I usually come up with a hooky/catchy chorus first. Something very specific about these verse vocals though are the close harmonies I plan on implementing with them. I remember sitting at the piano coming up with the harmonies as one of the first parts of this verse, even before I had lyrics for the verse.
Song Meaning
This song is about feeling lost, unsure about what you’re supposed to be doing with your life. Changing your mind a million times. SO many times that it drives you mad. Avoiding what you feel drawn to, due to fear. Getting stuck.
A lot of this for me is about my songwriting career. Songwriting has been my passion, but I spent 10 years in the television music industry avoiding what I really wanted to do… songwriting and performing. It wasn’t until recently that I truly felt like I have been able to find myself and feel enough self-confidence to do what I’ve always wanted to do with my life. <3
