Face the Truth

It’s not every day I get to work on a song for a tv show with my wife Sarah (more on that in the Song Lore section below…). Here’s a quick demo video of us laying down the tracks:

And this obviously isn’t the same song, but I thought I’d throw this in here at this point because this was another rare moment we got to work together (my sister is also on the violin later in the video and my youngest daughter makes a couple of cameos too). This song unfortunately I can’t officially release because a video game company called Tencent Games bought out the rights from us to use it on their new game Honor of Kings:

LYRICS

Tell me what you need if we see this through

Can I walk away if I face the truth

Are we’re fading?

Tell me what you need if we see this through

Am I losing you?

Can I walk away if I face the truth

We’re fading

Writing Process

If you didn’t know this by now, the way I provide for my family is by writing music for television shows, film, and video games. A lot of my music has ended up on reality TV shows (a lot of dating shows like ABC’s The Bachelor/Bachelorette etc, you can look my name up later on IMDb later if that sort of thing is interesting to you). This particular song was written for a show called Temptation Island. The show producers were asking for songs that were about breakups or conflict in relationships so my wife Sarah and I put our heads together and came up with this one.

The reason why it’s so short is because typically tv show cues don’t go over 2 mins at most, but usually end up being around a minute and a half long on average. Maybe some day we can flesh this song out a little more and make a longer release version for it.

We recently decided to include this version of it though on Fenwick & the Futures' re-print of our “hidden” CD "Open Your Wings EP" which is not available on streaming platforms. Open Your Wings EP is most notably the only CD I’ve recorded that has my wife Sarah’s vocals on it. The only place you can get it is in the order bump section when you pair it with my free Mind Cycles cd, HERE.

Song Meaning

I always hesitate to share a song’s meaning because it’s usually specific to me, but I truly feel these songs are meant for each listener to interpret and find their own meaning. I’d hate for my meaning to get in the way from a listener finding their own. Also, over time I usually find different meanings come out of my songs for me so it’s always changing.

That said, for me “Face the Truth” is a song about a relationship at its darkest point of not understanding each other and pleading with the other to communicate.

Miscommunication leads to darkness and solitude. When two people don't make a genuine effort to understand each other, separation results and darkness is found.

Embracing the realization that everyone just wants to be understood opens a path to reconciling the relationships seemingly lost to the shadow.
