LYRICS:

Beautiful, Terrible Trilogy

Beautiful, Terrible I: Clarity

Hey man, I won’t say that

you don’t size up

to this rite of pride

You only show

what they don’t know

if you can’t shut the mind

Well keep out of my head

with your unfed sense

of appetite

‘Cause this isn’t over

I will show for

what you can’t deny

I’ve seen the ghost,

but it doesn’t make this right

Something to hide

For saying nothing

you’re telling something

with the story broken

Enough with the get-up

Can’t make this shit up

with the chest wide open

‘Cause I’ve had enough,

you’ve said enough,

fed up, so done with

the narrative

Never mistaken interpretation

Only coward, only sin

‘Cause I can’t take this anymore

All the terrible lies you sold

But I’ll break these chains,

embrace the pain,

learn to accept

what I cant change,

and wake up

to beautiful clarity

Beautiful, Terrible II: Duality

I can’t believe

how easily forgotten was

this story made by only me

But with shadow side

I face this light

Show me that I never

lost what I planned

to prove to myself

that I not only can

but will do what i’ve needed

to be free of

beautiful, terrible duality

This broken timeline,

chosen path,

determined catalyst

Building stronger

Lifting higher

Raising to see all that is!

Face forever

Bound together

Find me in half of the mind,

half of the heart,

half of the soul,

half of our time forever

and never part

Beautiful, Terrible III: Reality

SONG LORE

Writing Process

I’ve been wanting to do a song like this FOREVER. The idea of not following a traditional verse/chorus/verse/chorus repeated format, but instead go from movement to movement.

The concept of this song all began on acoustic guitar per usual:

I can’t help but laugh now listening back to this, especially when I sing bass guitar lines or guitar solos, but that’s how my writing process works! I use my voice to sing out loud what I foresee (forehear? lol) all the instruments playing.

Interesting enough, this song started with Part 3 which actually was originally supposed to be a tag-on rock-out section at the end of the song “Wildfire, Our Love” and was recorded back in 2017 with that song for our “Visionaries” album.

Next came part 1 which was originally supposed to be a full song on its own with an additional second verse, bridge, and 3 choruses total (like a normal song), BUT I fought the urge to repeat sections and decided to make it its own movement which led right into part 2 which I wrote last.

At the end of writing part 2 though I wasn’t sure where to take it for part 3, but then I realized I already had part 3 recorded from that tag-on ending from Wildfire, Our Love from several years prior. That rock-out section didn’t feel quite like it fit on the Visionaries album just due to how rock-driven it was, and that album was more synth rock than driving alt rock. BUT I realized how perfectly fit with the driving rock vibes on the “Beautiful, Terrible” album so it was a no-brainer to include it as the finale and part 3 of the trilogy (and final track on the new album).

ANYWAY, there you have it! After sketching everything out on acoustic, I brought Sam into the studio to record drums for part 1 and 2 (part 3 was already recorded), and then came the guitar parts and vocals. My favorite part of the whole trilogy though is the beautifully haunting vocal section that Sarah sings with the piano softly playing behind her.

Song Meaning

In a nutshell, this song is really about the deconstruction of former beliefs and exploring new ones. It’s also about PERSPECTIVE which is what the hawk on the front cover symbolizes. Reaching new heights above it all only to realize that the reality of this life of duality is that it is all ONE and part of the same, and that neither can exist without the other.
