Writing Process

I originally wrote this song on acoustic guitar (like most of my songs), and the first riff to come out of it was the intro riff with the harmonizing single note guitar parts. From there the lyrics and melody to the original 2009 version were written basically simultaneously.

Our new version will contain more of a back-and-forth between mine and Sarah’s vocals, with Sarah taking the majority of the lead vocals.

Song Meaning

This song originally was about a guy and girl each taking turns saying goodbye to each other, flying away on a plane away from the other, with timelines not synching up. Much like when the heart says one thing and the mind says another, the song emphasizes the importance of both mind and heart being on the same page.

For our new version, we have yet to decide what the story will entail, but we want to keep the same overall metaphorical concept of mind and heart being on the same page.

In the original, I just realized that there was no backing vocal singing in the final chorus. I don’t remember making that decision, or maybe it was our producer’s decision at the time, but I think it’s significant the way we’ll be doing a back-and-forth duet between mine and Sarah’s vocals. On that final chorus the lyrics talk about “your love is gone” so my vocals will drop out, and it will only contain Sarah singing.
